you need to use a grout residue remover and use it neat on the bits that are left, and scrub and scrub and scrub. That or depending on your sealant it may just cover up. Properly cleaned after grouting their should be very little residue and it should just wash off with a sponge and then polish over with an old towel when dry. Lithofin Slate Seal is a good, thick, oily sealant that covers up the slate beautifully.
