Called them back and told them its still no good to tile but they still wanted me to do it and said they know it won't be my fault if it fails etc etc but I told them that doesn't matter and it's still my name that will look crap when people see it looking a mess. They finally said they will get another tiler in! Poor sod whoever gets it

good on you for sticking to your standers, I had a similar situation a couple of months ago, floor looked like your floor, told them I wouldn't tile it till the builder came back and put it right, need less to say I never heard from them again, as long as there are cowboy tradesmen out there, and customer that don't give a toss, its just going to keep happening...

It's just not worth the hassle it's so much easier to walk away from tat like this however much the customer begs!
