The jury seems to be divided on this one some say ceramic others porcelain but all agree on flexible powdered adhesive the plaster on the wall surrounding the wood burner has got cracks so it got me wondering about the tiles I want to put on, have been given 6 free samples to try so will do that, better to spoil the free sample than to tile 5sq metre and find out ceramic crack and have to rip the lot off

Ive a wood burner and the walls get real hot. Make sure the walls are properly dry first, which it sounds like they are if the plaster has cracked. Would be worth removing the finish plaster and tiling onto the scratch coat if its sound. Use flexi adhesive and grout.
Speak to your tile shop re tile choice, remember they are baked in the manufacturing process but you want to make sure glazed tiles wont crack.

Good luck, oh the wood burners are great at this time of the year!

the heat won't affect your tiles Johnys, typically they will have been through a kiln twice at 800dgs Celsius +, what substrate is beneath the cracked plaster? and is the cracked plaster a skim coat as it's normal for skim to crack when it's close to a wood/solid fuel burner
