working as tiler

Hi all am thinking of taking a course question is it worth it, will i be able to find work, will i have enough experiance to go on my own after course, im a plasterer by trade and i know that doing a 2week course would not be enough to be able to jump straight in to plastering, ive got 30yrs exp so can tile a little.

try and hook up with a pro tiler whilst doing your course, offer your services for free say 1or2 days a week
work is tight at mo some areas prob doing better than others, check out all the courses available , im sure some are better than others , good look

I would agree with the previous comments too. If you are a time served plasterer why not offer a teamed up service with a tiler who is looking to offer plastering as part of his package then you will learn from each other.

I offer tiling (my qualified trade) but also plastering (which I have learned over the last eight years) and plumbing (which I also learned through working with plumbers and selling bathrooms). I believe that versatility is key to being busy and profitable at the moment as customers are looking for a "one stop shop" in their search for saving money.

With 30 years experience in plastering you must have a customer database to contact/revisit and offer an add on service within your trade.
A 2 week course will give you additional insight into tiling basics and will help with the confidence factor - but to start a new trade in the present economic climate will test any budget.
As for customers wanting 'a one stop shop' 'jack of all' - it's never been a concept that I have agreed with. You only have to look at some of the threads within this site to see the problems that an unskilled person can achieve and this will often greatly increase the cost of a contract.
But this is just my opinion.:smilewinkgrin:

I must agree with TJ on this, I have said on this fine forum in the past. Although I can plaster, render, screed etc. I make my living as a time served tiler, it's what I do best

Hi carl i have been on those courses (not in tiling) and didnt find it much use at all, its totally different on a course its just you in a tiny bay with no problems to get round!
