Hi all,

First time tiler. Decided to tile the kitchen after a fire destroyed the old one.

I need a bit of advice as to which layout I should use for the pipe which has been boxed in.

Do I ignore the bond on the arch, split each side of the boxing into half and brick bond? Or do I continue the bond from the archway? If so, how? I've attached a few sketches below. Sketch 3 looks the most appropriate to me, however that would go against what I have on right corner.

Help!

Thanks in advance

The layout it good , only one thing for I would put plastic square trim around the door

Thank you

Bought some PVC trim earlier (see pics below). With hindsight, I should have carried out my research properly. I believe there is a proper tile trim (aluminium) available which can be curved around arches. PVC will have to do for now

Since you guys have been so helpful, can I pick your brains with a few finishing queries which are specific to bevelled tiles?

1) How do I finish off this socket? Cream coloured silicone? (as grout may crack after time to movement in the socket when changing plugs)

2) How would I get a clean silicone line where the tile meets the unit? I'm guessing fugi-tool wouldn't cater for the bevel.

3) What does 'scribing a corner' mean? One tile flush against wall, second tile mitred at 45degree and then profile cut off and butted in? As you can see from the pic, i've messed up one corner but would like to avoid this error on the remaining corner

4) On the 'boxing in', I've decided to use a tile trim as I am nowhere near competent enough to mitre. How would I deal with the bevel (diamond) against the trim? Grout and forget about it?

1....colour match silicone round the socket.
2...i just use my finger...... But a tool will be fine.
3...scribing metros means to cut the metro shape out of one side of the cut tiles. I would just cut them as normal and colour match a silicone joint in the corner with the same colour as the grout.
4.... Just grout it and forget about it...

The Fugi tool would work down the side of the socket. I would just mask up the side of the socket as close to the edge as you can get, run the bead of silicone into the joint and then using the 90 degree square edge run that down the tile and remove tape.

Thanks - What about where the tile meets the units though? and the internal corners? As others have said, I think using the same colour grout and silicone (mapei grey), with a few attempts i think can get it blend in somehow.

For me I would use the white on internal corners and against the units. Reason being, because of the bevelled edge on the tile the thickness of the bead will change each time it changes angle. It will really stand out, grey over white, the white would be less noticeable.

Good point. Thats my biggest concern, getting a constant straight bead over the angles whilst somehow ensuring the 'diamonds' dont stand out. I guess I'll only know when I get round to siliconing.

I'll try both white n grey n see what looks best. Thanks for that.

The Mapei grey should blend in quite well (I just spray with a little water with a drop of washing up liquid added and smooth over with a finger tip, multi wipes really help to keep things neat). Looking really good so far, had to tile a arched widow a few years back and the underside, cut individual pieces of trim to fit.

Evening - for some reason your attachments aren't showing up.. Might take a bit of time to replicate onto the forum maybe?

That arch looks stunning. The grey grout also compliments the white metro very well. We've gone for a slightly darker grey (cement grey) as we're hoping to have a dark laminate floor.................

All this talk of tiling is making me want to tile the floor though. Its a tiny area (1.5m x 1.5m max), and most of the cuts will be hidden under the plinth.

One step at a time I guess.

  • Question
I had a small leak in the main water line before the stop tap in my 1950s house. The copper pipe had worn away over the past 70 years, causing a small crack in the copper. A plumber/builder fixed...
