Hello,

I recently lifted some modern tiles to reveal the original Victorian Tiles (Actually dated late 30's but in the Victorian/Edwardian mosaic style). The previous owner had for some bizarre reason tiled over them. Sacrilege!

With considerable effort, I've managed to clean off almost all of the tile adhesive and they've come up quite well.
However, in some areas there's still a shadow where the old adhesive seems to have discoloured the tile a bit. My intention was to at this point contact the local Victorian tile specialist to provide the final cleaning/honing/polishing to try and get some of the marks off. However, they responded with one line saying "I’m afraid we cannot be of help on this occasion"
No further advice or anything, just that one liner.

So, I want a second opinion, and some advice on how to proceed. Is there anything I can do myself? Should I ask other specialist?

I'm not expecting perfection, but an improvement in the discolouration would be welcome.

So far I have:
Mechanically lifted old tiles
Mechanically cleaned most of the old tile adhesive off with a scraper blade
Soapy water wash to help highlight the bad areas
More manual cleaning with fresh blade
Diluted Acid wash (about 1:5 ratio using QEP Grout and adhesive residue remover)
Thoroughly cleaned with water afterwards
I still have a bit of manual cleaning to finish off but it’s mostly done (see pictures)

Thanks, Gwyn
Cardiff
