Had a job where a tiler had put a grey addy onto gypsum plaster on the the walls and the bathroom was being refurbed, The adhesive had been on for about 20 years it stuck like no other and no sign of any failure or any other problems:huh2:

he probably primed it.....

Went walkabout there. I probably do have the specs somewhere but as a wall is sand and cemented it is given a proper (mechanical key ) and i have never had a
failure when skimming over this .2 things that spring to mind (1) maybe when the pva becomes live either from it being tacky when skimmed over or some plasterers skim it when dry also bringing it live again with the water in the skim coat ,this when drying as a result of the(bulk of) water leaving the skim coat adheres the pva to render and skim to pva.why does this not happen with addy ?I dont tile much so am asking .
2 I know that addy cristalises as does skim when drying, this for me helps the skim to grip the keyed surface of non pva render.
Getting on to primers (bal or ardex ),having never used them are they just a different mix of pva. poly vinyl acetae or polyvinyl alcohol.just asking.SBR I have only used with cement work and have not used it as a primer/adhesive with opc/gypsum work so cant comment on this.what I do use is thistlebond when working on older sand cement that needs skimming and no/not enough keying has been applied to the basecoat.
As I say never had a failure and when it aint broke dont fix it works for me.

The thing about putting a cement addy onto plaster is the suction of gypsum material taking the moisture out of the adhesive to quick and having a failure, Thats a good reason to prime

I'll let you boys get on with it now. I'm staying ouy of it! :whatchutalkingabout

well, was troubling me all night, so i rang british gypsum this morning, explained the scenario to one of their technical team who liaised with somebody else, who got back to me with "what was that failure thing called, never heard of it. It is a perfectly suitable medium(s/c) to plaster(skim) onto using their multi skim (which is what I use) as long as background is cured" so I can only assume that the boffins at BG have maybe added an additive to counteract the reaction!
And I want to be in bed before 12 tonight!!:hurray:
