Old cracked screed over floorboards, can I just remove it?

Got a hallway and utility to tile (1920's semi), hallway is normal floorboards and then goes into utility but changes to an old 40mm screed. This is cracked badly and parts are loose, under the utility is a celler and when you go down you can clearly see the bottom of the utility floor which is...

    Silicone basin pedestal to floor?

Do you guys always silicone around the basin pedestal on the floor like you would a toilet? I've done it both ways and can't help thinking it looks better without. Discuss.

What grout colour looks best with travertine?

Doing a bathroom at the moment and have house to myself as customers have gone on holiday while I'm at it, the tiles are actually Wickes travertine look ceramic tiles but look decent enough. They did mention white grout but personally I think beige/Ivory would be better suited? White tile trim...

Topps Tiles, waiting all week for delivery

Does anyone know how long it takes Topps Tiles to deliver a Rubi Pocket 40? I ordered last Sunday night and its now Saturday morning and I'm still waiting, and I need my cutter. Track my order? Ha! no chance, as their website says 'no current orders' on my account, delivery was supposed to be...

    Ivory silicone, Mapesil Jasmine?

I'm looking for some decent ivory silicone, I did have some Everbuild ivory silicone that I used for non wet areas like internal corners well away from bath or shower but I believe its been discontinued as non of my local suppliers sell it anymore. I wouldn't use Everbuild anywhere near water...

Hardiebacker, do I screw down after addy has set?

Sorry guys, I had a quick search, I'm doing some work in my current bathroom today and its time to screw the 6mm Hardiebacker boards down. Never used these on the floor until now (always use them from now on) I would like to know the correct procedure. 6mm trowel? Primer? Plasterboard...

Floor prep advice, nasty springy chipboard patchwork

I've just started a new bathroom today (floor to be tiled), ripped everything out and when I pulled back the lino my eyes were furnished with a dodgy looking chipboard floor. The basin had been dripping so a 20 inch patch was rotten. Under the shower tray (no bath) the floor is a loose squeeky...

    Problem with yellowing grout

Hi all, I did a bathroom about 10 months ago with white gloss wall tiles and Webber anti mould grout, the grout has now gone a dirty yellow colour on all four walls, even over the door which is nowhere near the shower. The walls were all either new plasterboard or solid plaster. This is so...

    Trowel gone rusty

My new Marshaltown 6mm trowel has gone all rusty and I've only had it a few weeks, I have a Marshaltown plastering trowel which is 5 years old and as clean as a whistle. I would have thought they'd be stainless steel? I've started smearing it in silicone grease to keep in from getting worse...

    Plywood Vs Hardiebacker

There seems to be a quite a hate campain against poor old plywood lately, so much so that I think I'll take on board the advice and start using 6mm Hardiebacker on my bathroom floors now from now on. Most of my bathrooms are only small to medium. Can someone please tell me the correct...

    Slow forum

The forum as a whole seems very slow compared to the plumbers forum for example, I have fast broadband and everything but it seems to take forever before you can scroll down to read new posts and makes navigating to other sub forums a tedious long drawn out process. So much so I very rarely...

    New Big Clinker cracking tiles

Some of you may remember I was looking for a manual tile cutter and after much pondering I bought a big clinker, I used it for the first time today and was very happy with it but it did crack 2 or 3 tiles upon 'breaking'. The tiles were nothing big just ceramic of roughly A4 size, they all...

    Question on marking and cutting

Just thought I'd ask the pro tilers on here how you measure and mark up your tiles. I find once I've transfered the pencil marks onto the tile I have to run a strip of brown packing tape against the marks so I have something visible to cut against. I can't see any of you guys doing...

Homebase tiles, this can't be right!

I've been fitting & tiling bathrooms for about 3 years now and in that time there have been at least two bathrooms with tiles from Homebase. The tile sizes seem to drift up and down like mad, I've had no choice today but to take a thin slither off at least half the tiles I fixed. :mad2: Take...

Lipage you can trip over (see pic)

I saw this on a recently layed floor, today. Floor was wooden suspended, not uneven concrete. :yikes:

    New bathroom pics

This is a bathroom I've just finished, I did the whole lot myself apart from electrics, even painting the ceiling. I hope the pics work as I've not posted pics on here before. The bottom row of tiles looks thinner on the pics than in real life, it was a case of not having a really thin tile...

Tilers who grout down to kitchen worktop

I see loads of new kitchens where the tiler has just grouted down to the worktop and not used silicone, of course leading to it all cracking out. Even where the tiling is spot on and the kitchen is high end I still see it. Am I missing something here? why do so many not use silicone? :30:

    Cant stop back buttering......

Hi all I've been a plumber/bathroom fitter for nearly 3 years now and I do a lot of bathrooms all with lots and lots of tilling. I make an exceptional job of everything and get loads more bathrooms from recommendations. I need to speed up on the tiling though, and I probably need to get out...

    Silicone o tile adhesive?

Silicone or tile adhesive? Hi all, I would like to know what the prefered method is for filling the gap where the floor tiles meet the wall tiles, I use floor grout at the moment but can't help thinking I should be using silicone. If silicone do you just use white? Current bathroom has beige...
