I have been sold 12mm depth trim for my 9mm ceramic tiles.... is this right?

I am looking at fitting a tavertine 610x610x15 floor tile and have been advised that this tile is not suitable for floors and that i should be looking at tiles a min of 18mm thick? Anyone what to comment if this is correct or recommend a suitable depth of tile.
