110 or 240

Do you guys have all your tools in 240 like me or do you have both?just got a contract to do a whole new bathroom showroom:whatchutalkingabout ...but just realised that I might need to have all my tools 110 since I'll be working on a site.

The other thing is I'm doing the work for a builder and we've agreed a day rate but haven't sorted out when and how I'll get paid,the job could last well over a month so I don't really want to work a whole month without pay,plus I bet he'll not pay me straight after the job is finished.
How do most of you get paid for jobs like this?:huh2:

hi mate

i know its tempting to get 240v because of the convenience but, as you grow you'll get bigger contracts and these can lead to commercial work which often relies on 110v, so if i were you and you are now starting to work for builders then id at the very least make sure your wet cutter is 110v. maybe go for cordless drills. skil saws, jigsaws etc. but get your heavy duty mixer 110v..hope this helps

as for getting paid. this needs to be clarified asap. if i had a pound for all the builders over the years who try and keep you waiting till they get paid, then id have enough money to change all your tools to 110v lol.. or the chancers that say, if you do a good cheap job here, then i'll have loads of work for you in the future. the carrot and stick malarky. you tell the builder you want paying in stages. only you know what your happy with but dont let them bully you. i'd rather walk away and get paid for nothing, than work for 2 weeks and get shafted (which incidentally i have done). if he's dubious over paying, then theres a problem straight away. i might not have much experience in tiling but i can spot a chancer 200 miles away,,,,,take care mate and make sure your paid when you have done the part you have agreed. stand firm, be constructive and polite but dont let anybody mess you about over your money. my motto over money is..if theres a problem, theres a problem ha ha

All my tools are 110v, like Mr burden says sooner or later you'll be invited to work on larger jobs, you may even need a generator.

And also remember most builders will deduct 20% of your money for tax, so remember that, its not a problem as it comes of your tax bill at the end of the year, just it makes your day rate look alot cheaper than you thought.

the Health and safety executive are looking to changeing from 110v to 240v as the 110v have more amps and is more likely to kill you in an accident but this has been going on for two years that i know of

i spoke to an hse executive early in the year and he confirmed they are to do away with 110v and just use 240v with an in line breaker....we'll have to wait and see....

Thanks for alll the replies lads,started today and can use what I'd like.I did think of getting all my stuff 110 but was told by someone else that HSE will soon change the voltage,probably by all the gear then they'll change it lol.
