They are 12mm thick and obviously heavy. Derta-mat going down on 15 mm ply over floor boards. The builder has got me BAL white flexi addy. Can I get away with a 12mm trowel, or should I use a 10mm and back-butter the tiles with a 6mm? The backs are very shallow re smoothmess.

Use your 10 half round notch and back butter with the flat side of your trowel mate

If it's all nice and flat Fred and no deep recesses on the back of tiles i'd go with 10mm on substrate and use the back of same trowel to back paste.Ditra is surprisingly easy to trowel onto.Good luck and don't be afraid to use the 12mm if you want.
