Hi everyone

Im finding that if I use a 6mm trowel I get bad coverage on the tile and have to back butter the tile. What if anything am I doing incorrectly and does it depend entirely on the wall flatness?

Best Wishes

Is their a standard for plasterers regarding wall levelness? Advice appreciated.

There is no standard its all about pride in your work. Use an 8mm trowel on walls m8 rarely lets me down and tiles are getting bigger so u need the grab.

theres many factors in notch size, flatness of walls, tile size, what adhesive etc. you dont want to use an 8mm for tubgear for instance

6mm trowel is normally more than plenty mate. What technique do you use when you set the tiles? I find that, and the consistency of the adhesive, to be the most important factor when dealing with fairly normal sized tiles.

It all depends on the plasterer and who's quality control. I've 15+ years plastering seen some sights over the years. There ain't much you can do with skim as it's only around 3mm thick, mostly down to the hardwall / bonding underneath which should be bang on plumb and straight edged.
If you're getting poor coverage at 6mm could be size of tile and/or backing. Quickly try a larger trowel fix tile and remove and see what coverage you get. I don't use standard 6,8,10mm trowels now - moved over to those gucci karl dahm trowels with different combs in them. Excellent coverage but you do use a little more adhesive.

Cheers,

Dave

I use a rubi 10mm round notch for walls mate, imo 6mm is useless, with a 10mm round notch you dont actually use that much more adhesive, is easier to use tubbed and mixed addy too. I never use square notch.
