Hi fellow tilers

I tend to read the forum rather that post too much. I have recently finished a 4 week PTS course. I consider myself a much more experienced diy-er now than a tiler at the moment.

How long does it take to stop checking out grout lines and cuts when out and about?

My first job will be my bathroom, then the nieces and then a friends wet room - in that order. All free of course.

I have set up a business but it will take time to establish, plus it's probably the wrong time of year.

Tools? Agonised over cutters, but given the choice and after breaking thousands of PTS's tile in practice, I have come down in favour of a Rubi. Liked the TS for visibility, but prefered the TR for moveable breaker. For portability I would prefer something a bit smaller than the TR600, but everyone seems to be saying that big tiles are in. Couldn't fault the monty for cuts, ease of use etc, but as a beginner I liked to see the cut, plus I was getting quite good a curved cuts on the TR. A Bricolinna wet cutter will do nicely.

As for gaining access to the pro section - 20 posts? mmm could be some time. Pity that.

Keep up the good work

Welcome to the forums Frogeye, ex PTS trained myself. You never stop checking out tiling wherever you are now, it's in the blood!

Don't be frightened of buying a Montolit, I bought one and my last job really brought home to me how much in love with it I am , 38deg pitch roof in bathroom, sort out correct angle with first tile, then the rest just follow along - great! Will pretty much cut anything and all in one easy action!

Hi Grumpygrouter

If they sold wheels with the larger sized monty's I could hitch it to my car as a trailer. I think I will go for the Rubi - when push came to shove I always returned to that one. You couldn't fault the build quality of the montolits though - it certainly looks the part.

Good luck frogeye,
Finished the PTS 4 weeker a month or so ago, seems ages now as ive been flat out tiling since with 3 weeks work infront of me. I have a Rubi TR. Found porcelain a bugger after only working with ceramic on the course but you get used to them. Check out the blades for porcelain on tile trader.com for the wet cutter, i would be lost with the origional blade that came on the cutter, its pants for porcelain!

Funny isn't it when people buy a ruby and then have to buy a new wheel for porcelain! Monty only has one size wheel and it seems to cut anything. You are correct though Frogeye, 'tis well built!

Ha ha! You've got the fever!
I used to manage an Art Gallery and that was 7 years past. I STILL critique the framing quality of art wherever I go. And Now, I ALSO check out the tile quality as well!

Welcome to the forum!
