addy for slate

Hi, got my first slate job next week and wondering what the corect method for laying them on to a fully cured concrete floor would be ? i will be cleaning the slate and putting them into different thickness etc starting off with the thickest tile first. whats the best addy to use for this ? floor is not perfect and theres no ufh and no deflection. thanks :smilewinkgrin:

hi terry i would fix your thicker tiles in centre leaving cuts to perimeter to use up your thinner tiles....do check the ratio of thick to thin tiles you have however as the thick may not work in your favour

what type of slate is it terry

mapei keraquik is my choice for slate

any choices on sealers also

thanks ! iam a bit of a novice regarding slate/stone to be honest , another tiler i kind of no said he would only use sand and cement for fixing slate ? thought this was a bit odd as sand and cement has to be a certain mm in depth to bond 60 65mm ? is this correct? got a HG sealer for the slate. i get confused over stone tiles and slurrys / dry pack/wet mix, sbr, bed thickness etc... :mad2: but hopefully this will all become clear one day so i can get a good night sleep for once ! :lol:

Calibrated slate you will get away with a standard 6mm max depth cement based adhesive but if uncalibrated then move to a PTB or thickbed adhesive.

its uncalibrated , so iam thinking of a latex self leveler then start from the centre with the thickest tile with a thick bed addy working my way to the edges with the thiner tiles. just one more question , how do you level the tiles when laying slate , as there all different hights if you no what i mean ! normaly i would put a level on each tile to the next to get a flat surface ?

Personally I'd sort the tiles and start laying the thickest ones first row by row, back buttering the tiles more and more as they got thinner to maintain a nice flat floor.

As well as checking the thicknesses before you start, also check the dimensions as they may vary by a few mm from tile to tile, you will need to compensate for this in your grout lines if necessary.

iam a right in thinking if i ever use sand and cement to fix tiles it must be at a depth of 65mm unless modified ? or is this just the screed thickness.
