Quick update - spoken to builder and true to form he is coming out tomorrow with tiler and (although he has been successful with this combination in the past) is quite happy to strip the tiles and start again with 2 part flexible after checking if any further prep is required. Hopefully this will end my misery. Any ideas on drying time for this folks bearing in mind it may be fairly thick in places due to uneven walls?

hi jasta, good news that hes coming to remedy the mistake

however if its skim finished not only will quartz be too heavy for it but the fact you need to build out with cement adhesive is going to add to the weight pushing its limits even further imo

also ensure no dot and dabbing is done to pack the tiles out...how much are we talking bedding out here?

Hi jasta
im glad your builder is putting it right for you, when he comes back mention about the weight issue and the wall not being flat or needing packing and he could solve both issues by reboarding the wall with a backer board he sounds like someone who'd listen as he's coming when you've asked him to and he's putting it right, the adhesive goes off normally in a couple hours but recommended grouting is normally 24 hr depending on the make but ask your supplier or read the back of the bag on that. Good luck....again keep us informed:thumbsup:

Hi Guys, just a quick update. Builder returned yesterday with Tiler friend who agreed with you all and immediately all tiles were numbered and stripped back (taking care not to damage my shower tray). Just over 50% still had wet adhesive on some part of the tile. Tiles were re-applied same day using a flexible rapid set powdered adhesive and were already going off last night - much to my (and my wife's) delight. Tiler planning to grout on Saturday morning and fit screens/seal where necessary on Monday - and all at the original price. Many Thanks to all - I might just manage a full nights sleep now.
