Hello everyone,

I've joined the forum to see if I can get any advice or help from you guys in the industry.

My son, who will soon be turning 18 has decided he would like to start a career as a floor and wall tiler. This is where we both need some information regarding the type of jobs he can aim for. He's been telling me that he would prefer building site work, so he can work on new builds rather than doing work in people's homes.

Now I've never been in the building industry so my knowledge is lacking. Could he persue a career, doing site work more so than visiting home etc?

Thanks alot
Joe

Site work on smaller sites is ok but contracting work is a sharks pool in my opinion. Not something I would recomend to the faint hearted or the new to the industry. Unless your son is really hard nosed and contract savvy he is likely to be eaten alive in this environment. My suggestion would be to start off in the smaller builder or domestic sector.

In my opinion, it would be best to get your son to do a college course or perhaps gain some work experience working with a tiler to get an insight into the trade and decide if tiling is somtehing he is happy to do and has the abilty to do.

Tiling can be very rewarding financialy as well as intrinsacally in terms of satisfaction. With this said it is a trade that is often undervalued and the naive frequantly assume that it is easy to do. Therefore work experience or college training of some sort os the best way forward I believe.

Hope this helps

Thanks alot for the replies.

I think the only reason he wanted site work was because he doesn't feel confident enough going to people homes. But I'm sure that's what courses are for.. To give you that confidence in your own abilities. Maybe he will feel differently afterwards.

Regarding courses.. As we live in the south I have noticed a couple of training providers, Able and Diamond. Would a 6 week or so course give him the necessary skills to start up on his own, or would you need to find an employer?

Considering the 6 weeks NVQ level 2 with diamond

Good idea??

Joe
