Advice needed Please

Hi,

I have recently moved into a new build house and which needs some floors tiling. I have tiled a downstairs concrete floor which is the first I've ever done. My next floor is a bathroom which has floor boards. I have read that I need to lay plywood first but I'm confused as to what thinkness this needs to be. Any advice would be appreciated. The tiles I am looking at are polished porcelain and seem fairly thick.

Does your floor have any deflection (movement or bounce) in it and is it floor boards or chipboard flooring.....?

You could always lay 6mm no-more-ply boards over the tongue and groove once you have made sure its all secure and theres is no deflection (bounce).

No-More-Ply fixs down with glue and screws and gives the perfect surface to tile to!

If its a large area or you are using an expensive tile you could also consider the use of a de-coupling membreane (more info)

The floor seems sturdy however I can't actually see the wood as there is a blue paint over it?? From how flat and sturdy could well be boards but I could always check with the builder. Thanks I will take a look at the membrane also.

Chipboard flooring seems to be a massive nightmare at every turn for me right now!!

not the best in bathrooms recommend waterproofing once floor is sorted

I think that this blue covering may be waterproof covering. I'm probably best checking with builders to see exactly what's down.

If no deflection, then fix 6 mm no more ply using spf adhesive and screw every 200 mm leaving a 2 mm gap between the boards and apply suitable scrim tape to joints then fix tiles with spf adhesive. You can instal a decoupler on top of cement board, but is more of a belt and braces approach for a small floor.

sounds like it (builders work) not much thought gone into that the waterproofing needs to go on top of the cement sheet before tiling
once you screw down the cement sheet the waterproofing already in place on the chipboard is useless
