Just been out to look at a complete bathroom refurb - all the standard stuff except that the customer wants a p-shaped bath fitted and a curved bath panel built and tiled with mosaics....

I've done a few tiled bath panels in my time but never a curved one so have to admit I don't know where to start? On reflection I'm guessing that once I have a frame built I could then laminate 2 or 3 pieces of 4 -6mm ply around the frame to form the curve. Does this sound right or am I way off the mark?

Would be grateful for any tips on where to start.... Cheers. Chris

You would be best to use a curved backer board such as Marmox. This will give the perfect curve you are looking for. Using ply would be a big mistake.

Your main issue would be getting the frame to curve that you are going to attach the marmox to, I would have thought. Unless the bath already has a wooden batton under the lip to attach it to, some do, some don't.

wedi boards, cut almost through in slats vertically and shape them to your desired shape
fill the opened voids with adhesive and wedi mesh and let set then tile onece its attached to frame

i've got the same job to do soon in a mates bathroom. i planned on using plasterboard , wetting it to get the curve. i may look into getting curved boards ( i didn't know they were available )

hi mike you can buy the straight boards and shape them to your required shape, wedi do bespoke shapes i beleive to yur requirements but it wil lcost you

Worked on one with the spanish tiler last year and used exactly the method Kilty describes.
Ended up very good.
I'm sure if you look through the pictures Rob(Spanishtiler) has submitted over the last year there may be a photo of the frame half tiled.

Did one 2 years ago on ply that a joiner had set up before I got there, it looked good but I wasn't sure at the time if the addy would hold well enough on such a thin bed. Been back to do some Silicon work and checked it out and its all ok. However if I'm speccing the job I'd use scored Wedi boards as Kity says. Done that twice and its feels a lot better.

Thanks guys, Just had a look at the Marmox website and their curved boards appears the easiest way to do this - Prices dont seem to extortionate either so thinking this is probably the way forward. Had no idea this sort of thing was available and sounds better than using ply...which I was a bit concerned about anyway!!

Anyone thats used the Marmox system.... do you need a solid frame top and bottom or does the board hold its shape if just supported with vertical stud work??

Many Thanks

make a former to the shape your board needs to be.

lay the board in the former and fill the scores with spf.

when set remove and fix in place ready to tile.

I would make one curved piece and use a std board for the straight run, these can be joined insitue and feathered with rapid.
