cheers guys for the replies, i'm glad you all thought i done the right thing

people think because theres a recession on and the building game is suffering that they can treat you like a total idiot and you'll do anything to get the work or take any offer they think they can give you!

just spent my whole weekend re tiling a plumbers shambolic tiling attempt.

job finished ...took 10 phone calls and 2 days to get payment for 200 quid of ecxtras off the customer.

she has now flown off on 2 weeks holiday without paying the plumber and says she will pay when it suits when she gets back, this si being done to hack him off because of the original mess he made.

i spoke to the customer personally explaining its not the plumber its affecting it s me as he owes me all the money from the job,,she wasnt remotely interested and this woman expects me to go back and do her kitchen for her...dont think so.....

A week, How big was the splash back mate, or were you doing the floor as well, some people just want it doing for nowt, infact if you'd have knocked the extra cash off then he would have probably rung the other tiler back and told him that he needed to knock some cash of because you've qouted cheaper.

was doing the whole lot m8! i was getting the ply for nothing and charging them nowhere close to the going rate for it,your probably right they will be playing one of the other, i will find out who's doing the tiling as it's just round from the mother outlaw who passes every day! nothing against the guy personally but he is destroying the game for everyone:thumbsdown:

:yikes:Well Its seems it spreading. A customer rang me saying she had been let down by her chosen tiler could I do it? 18m2 floor which needs levelling, in porcelain 330x330 after the kitchen had been installed (lots of cuts). I quoted £680 inc leveller and materials thinking this was a keen price only to be shown two quotes one for £210.00 and one for £370.00 and could I match it?
I couldn't get out of there fast enough.
I explained the cost of materials alone will be close to the first quote.
She said I thought you would be expensive when I herd your voice on the phone
No love I just do the job right best of luck!!!
Where are these people coming from? what sort of work are they putting out?
you do the maths its not possible to live a man's got to eat!!!! :ban::thumbsdown:

good grief thats some prices there 210 notes for a floor in porcelain?

what on earth are they laying the tiles with:mad2:

18m2 should be laid & grouted in a good days graft (depending on cuts).
Most folks dayrate is £200 or less.
If materials are paid for on top of that money its still higer than dayrate.

Sounds like they probably wont self level though, which wont leave a good finish....but does the customer understand or would they be able to spot it?

Im in no way agreeing with working for that m2 price quoted above im just showing how someone else might be thinking. I would walk away as well:thumbsup:
I dont make a difference between ceramic or porcelain by the way, they cut the same, its just nipping porcelain slows me up and i usually dont need to.

Got asked to quote a 21sqm kitchen floor (total floor area was 60sqm when cleared). I'm lucky and booked up for a couple of months, but customer wanted it doing quick, i.e. over a weekend. He says "It'll only take you a day", "'k off I said". Quoted £30/sqm as it was porcelain and a weekend job (plus customer came across as a dick). Next day he phones me to say that I was the most expensive and that he can't afford me, "Great, I'll have a weekend off then! - Bye", I says.

I don't discount unless I'm well desperate, and neither should any decent tiler!.
