Trading standards will tell you as I have. Used to be my job to know these things. A receipt is simply proof of purchase and nothing more.

If you buy anything from any shop you are not entitled to a refund under any law unless it is proven it was faulty at the point of purchase in which case your statutory rights give you a refund entitlement.

Most places have a refund policy as a matter of customer service.

Ebay it. I'm sure it'll go for something on ebay, stick a reserve on it and you'll not lose out too much I'd have thought. Might be worth doing it early feb though as wages will be tight until end of Jan early Feb for most people I'd have thought.
