maybe clutching at straws here but just wondered if anyone has any tips regarding excercises for your back. I have been told that your lower stomach muscles are important for strength in the back. Has anyone had any other advice, or have any advice for strengthening the back muscles.......or should i just start a routine of sit ups etc........thanx Ric

I could write a really long essay on this subject, but I'll settle for telling what I did to strengthen my back after an injury, and why.

I excersise with weights twice a week, and I try to get 10km on my excercise bicycle before breakfast three times a week as well. In total, I exercise about four days every week.

The key for me has been moderation (not training the same muscles too often, or too hard), and to mostly use compound exercises. By compound exercises, I mean for example the deadlift, bench press, and lateral row. Those particular ones train alot of muscle groups at the same time, which has the twofold advantage of saving time, and, as opposed to isolation exercies, they do not easily cause imbalances.

I fixed my back doing three sets of crunch situps once a week, three sets of back extension once a week, and three sets of deadlift once a week. I find this to be optimal for me, but it may well be different for you. I use other execises as well, in order to keep the rest of my body in check, but since this thread is about back exercises, I won't go there:yes:

You want to take up yoga Ric. I had no end of back and knee problems after playing squash for a few years. Got to the stage with my back that I couldn't walk for more than 10 or 15 minute without needing to sit down.

Started yoga about 3 or 4 years a go and now have very few problems.

need to be careful about the style of yoga though, some can do more harm than good!

thanks for advice lads... i am getting chronic sciatic pain especially in the morning when getting in and out of van and it has only started since taking up tiling. went to see someone and he could not pin point anything. i try to do some warm ups in the morning but to no avail. i think something like a proper regime like the weights or yoga is what i need.

All tilers should regularly use an osteopath..you will twist and bend your self into some tight spots and it can put strain onto certain areas of the spine etc....an osteopath will make sure all is in line etc....well worth a visit at least once a year......also ric they will sort your back out no probs.......they re-align your vertebrae and that......good luck and don't scream......
