Backer Board Or Not?

Hi.
I am pricing a small bathroom. It has been refurbished with new chipboard flooring. Do I need to use a backer board or will flexible adhesive cope? There's not much movement and the new boards are level. There are two steps into the bathroom so a doorway is not affected by levels. Advice would be welcomed.

The guy I'm pricing against has priced for 6mm ply. Thought about ply but you can't go wrong with a backerboard.

I know. I told the client who keeps trying to hammer the price down. He questioned my price, mind you, he wouldn't be the first to tell me he had had a cheaper quote and be telling porkies! Hence my silly question to begin with.

As soon as I hear that I normally walk away (not very often mind)
I'm always one of the most expensive quotes they will get but they normally know the quality that comes with the price & that gets me the job.
