Bal Single Part Flexible-how long before using shower

Hi all,

As the title suggests really. I'm tiling a shower area above a bath using Bal SPF and noticed the instructions say you shouldn't use a shower for 2 weeks afterwards. Seems a long time to ask the tenant not to use his shower after it's finished-is it really necessary to wait that long?

Don't get the tiles wet and it can be used after a few days i guess.

Leaving for two weeks is what's required by
BS 5385: part 4, clause 7.2.1.
If you don't and there is an issue with the install, any manufacturer guarantees in regard to the adhesive, will be null and void.

You can ask the client not to use it but once the door is closed behind you they'll do whatever they want!

As has been said if your tenant uses the shower before the time instructed and you have any problems the guarantee will be useless once happened to me with bal

Thanks for the replies. So It's not just a case of Bal covering their backs asking you to wait 2 weeks? I thought maybe common sense would suggest maybe 2-3 days wait period??

I was considering holding off grouting to enforce the 2 week period but just realised the grout (Bal Micromax 2) also has a two week wait period after completion. At that all I could do is hold off siliconing the edges but then I run the risk of the guy just using the shower regardless and creating an even bigger problem.

Do all you professionals try to enforce this two week wait period after finishing a shower or do you just ask that the customer leaves it a day or two?

How do you professionals deal with the curing/setting/drying aspects with in your jobs ?

We can only advise clients of what's required, what they do when we leave is impossible to control.
I think a lot will have to do with the rapport we have with the client.
If they're happy with their service and are willing to listen to advice from the beginning, there's not much cause for concern.
You tend to get a feel as to whether or not they believe in you.
Problems arise when there's an issue, and it's not always possible to prove that it was caused by the client not following recommendations.
From my own experience with most of the work I carry out, it'd be impossible to use the shower/wetroom within a few days, there's always a lot more work to be carried out.
So wouldn't matter if the client wanted to use the room, they simply couldn't.
The only people who I see regularly ignore advice are building contractors, and they generally know the risks they run.
