Ive been asked to quote for tiling a balcony, as far as i can tell its supported by steel with a thick marine ply base covered with shed style felt to waterproof. My plan is to screw and adhesive 6mm hardi, cover with homelux matting to waterproof and then tile any better suggestions?

That has got failure wrote all over it mate..

You need to do visual checks on the integrity of the substrate and it's suitability to be tiled upon.

Personally i think you need to strip back to basics to make sure it will withstand a tiled surface and not just to try and water proof it.

Loads of issues to consider from expansion to freeze/thaw probs at different times of the year.

Cheers Kev, I have done balconies over the years using different methods. Most successful being sand and cement screed, but as Dave says it can be risky I would contact Schluter for more info:smilewinkgrin:

That build up Lee has described sounds dodgy:yikes: My advice is pretty much the same as Daves - strip it right back, speak to Schluter and start again

Ok i should have given a bit more detail, the balcony is already constructed with enclosed sides and a good fall to drain, unless i'm missing something that schluter page is mainly concerning edging profiles and drainage. The reasoning behind my original plan would be hardi screwed through the felt into the ply to give a sound base to tile onto then the homelux matting to stop water penetrating the screws and getting into the ply, the matting is also a de-coupler. With regards freeze/thaw cycle if the base is steel with a ply skin (no bounce) and enclosed what else am i checking for?

It's quite a newish build and has been done to a high spec. from what i can see. The felt looks well stuck down, skirts up the sides and is then covered by cladding, so not really an option.

Steel doesn't half expand and contract a lot with heat/cold.........
