I have a customer that had an older street light with a 30W Phillips Sox bulb in in. It's an absolute pain to get to as it's mounted on a building very high with obstacles preventing easy ladder access and steps / ramps at ground level all around it.
When it stopped working I offered a new LED unit. He would rather keep the 30W Sox bulb as he is suspicious that either converting to LED bulb or a new LED unit will mean needing to access it more frequently due to lesser reliability. He asked can it be repaired, which is a question I never mind considering.
The actual problem is not the bulb which is still available, but with the Phillips EXC 055 S/50 electronic ballast unit (which itself was retrofitted at some point) and seems to not be available any longer. I wondered if any of you fine lot is aware of any alternative products that will do the job? Were low pressure sodium bulbs an entirely Phillips thing?
The only units on ebay have are conventional ballast and ignitor units and we are not going back there! It may be that it's the end of the road for this style of lighting and he will need to accept that!
I can see his point that the current setup has lasted about 12 years without being touched, and I don't feel like promising an LED replacement will do the same.
