Hello everyone,

I have had an interesting project come my way.

A 50m/2 honed basalt (60x60) floor that has been grouted with charcoal (it has gone into the basalt face) 3 coats of impregnator and then when it went smeary, coated with Fila Longlife Wax.

Do I:

1. Chemically strip it off, spot clean it and then use an impregnator?
or
2. Chemically strip it and diamond pad the surface, followed by sealing with an impregnator?

Has anyone else had issues with Basalt and did they find a solution?

In the past, on new Basalt, after a thorugh clean and after using as v. dark grout, I have used a good impregnator and buffed it off just as it was going off.

Thanks,

Tom

if its dark basalt I would walk away or get a specialist in.

It could be re-honed in place. That is a method we are now looking at, as after doing a test we can strip off the surface sealant, but find that there is a grout hazed in the stone, as a lighter coloured grout than the stone was used. - That is a real no-no with Basalt.

We are thinking of doing a gentle hone on the tiles as with some machines they can chip the edges of the tiles. We use HTC Twister pads (black and red) to take the surface down, as they are softer on the edges, with lots of water and a good, strong wet-vac.

I have now got it sussed! My thrid and final (secret) test method has made it look fantastic. Looks exactly as it should have done (and what the client saw in a magazine). Client is happy and booked me in.

Thanks,

Tom

Hi Tom we have a problem with the finish on some Basalt tiling and wondered if you may be able to help?
