Bathroom wall preparation

Tilers Forums Official Sponsors

I'm going to tile walls and floors of my bathrooms. It appears at the moment the walls are a single layer of painted plasterboard (ca. 12mm).

What is your advice on how to prepare the walls for tiling? Is the plasterboard sufficient to hold the tiles or will I need to remove it and install tile underlay? Or can the tile underlay be installed over the plasterboard?

Here (in NZ) it seems to be common to use 6mm fibre cement boards as tile underlay. Would that be ok? For the wet areas I am thinking to use Marmox Multiboard or Wedi or similar.

Any help would be appreciated.
