BATON or not!

I would say that all depends on your experience and skills level. if you are not yet confident to do it without batons, use them. Better to be safe than sorry.

I dont quite see why you wouldn't use battens on walls, I can fix a batten in maybe two minutes and then I'm good to go. No worries about slipping etc, why wouldn't you use them ?

Totally you choice alastair, if using batons makes the job easier for you then use them, if you can manage without them, all the better. I use batons on majority of my job for no other reason than i feel more comfortable doing it that way.

Ive been tiling form 6 years now, and was allways taught to only use battons if realy needed..ie large formats tiles etc
And usually if they are too heavy i would level up the bottom course and tile up from there.
But to be honest with most ready mixed adhesives they grips so well theres realy no need and i will tile down from half way up the wall and put in my bottom cuts when i get there, suppose its what ever works for you or what your used to.

Yes very sarcastic lol i didnt look at the date just thought i would see what the general opinion was, as ive just started working with a guy who swears by battens, ive never seen the need in normal circumstances

i prefer to tile across rather than down and then place the cuts in at the bottom in one hit..

I like to use them. Run them round the whole room at chosen height, then put 1st run of tiles in. I know alot of adhesives claim not to slip, and many members will back that up, I just like the security of a batton to get that first run spot on to make the rest of the job a breeze.

i use a pencil line, i like using a laser to help setting out but i cant stand looking at a laser line all day, does my eyes in.

I use a laser for setting out and as a guide when putting up mosaics or small tiles. For large tiles and stone I always use a level and start from the bottom as I have a pet hate for leaving the cuts till last.

I would use a White powdered addy as well prob cheaper than White star
And better imo

This is a perfect example of why this site is so good. So many different views and ways of achieving the same result. I've always used batons and had never considered not doing so, it's so important to consider all methods when doing our trade.
