I set out with my laser, mark my datum with pencil, join up my datum with pencil. Then using my staff I introduce my second datum, this one follows the contour of the floor. This determines the size /shape of my 1st cut. So no batons for me.

Why use battens when u can fling on the adhesive to give a good dob and dab fix for the tiles???

Batterns everytime laser to mark out cant see why anyone would want to look at laser allday! if floor heated can leave expantion joint then tile to floor

Just to try it out I did a bathroom today without a batten. It didn't go well!!! I would perhaps get used to it after a few goes but I found it very time consuming. So in conclusion I ain't changing my ways!!!

batton for me as well. if its a newly plastered house and the walls are straight and floors level,i suppose no battons and a v good adhesive would be fine. but i like working off a level playing field:smilewinkgrin:,although putting cuts in is a real pet hate of mine:mad2well and grouting,bores the backside offa me:drool5

For those that batten, how do you address a tanked area?

Batton away through the tanking, when baton off tape the holes and thats it.No probs.

I set out the same as Phil (page 2),found that by the time iv'e cut battons (each room diff size) and fix them to wall,i could have put several tiles (cut or not) on the wall.

I'm just starting to get the confidence to try tiling walls without battens, and it still depends on the job/tile.

Most commonly, I use the wedge shaped pegs (from the clips to get floor tiles level) to help get the first row in level, and check it with a straight edge.

I've used a spirit level/straight edge w.Rubi batten stands for the last couple of years. Before that I just used wooden battens, and I would check them with a straight edge when fixing to get any twists out of the wood.

I've recently bought a CL laser and I've just completed my first job with it. It really helped on that job, as it was a small entrance hall with 4 doors, and I couldn't get a straight edge to any wall!!

Interesting think i might give this a go. If you have a datum line on the wall and you are quick can't see a problem, no need to start half way up the wall could just start a couple of tiles up.

why start a couple of tiles up when you could start at the bottom (1st row).

Find it soul destroying when I've done walls, tiled floor and then have to go back to cutting in the wall.

Why indeed! Work to a datum line on your first row...so why do people start half way up the wall?

after 12 years i still battern, and use a laser, and always use spacers im a bit of a bugger for perfection, and i still make money.:smilewinkgrin:

I dont batten anymore, havn't for a long time, can't remember when i did last to be honest, sometimes use me laser level & just mark the corners etc, then either pencil them in with a straight edge of use a chalk line on long walls, depends how big the job is & I too always use spacers.

That pink dress really doesn't suit you! I think green is more your colour.
