Hi all, daft question time.

As per title, I am starting a splashback tomorrow, the customer has supplied the tiles 300mm x 100mm to be laid brickbond style, no problem so far, they have bought 55 of each colour and would like to have them in a random fashion. How the hell am I gonna make sure that I'm not left with too many of one tile towards the end of the job ? The way I'm thinking is to make piles of tiles in no particular order out of the 3 colours and just fix them as they're stacked. How would you do it ? Never been asked to do brickbond with 3 colours random style and just want the job to look it's best. Each tile will in effect be in touch with 6 others.

Thanks in advance

Hey.

I'd make a mixed pile as you suggested. Keeping them random in your pile and using them from the top. Make sure you mix them up well, if you have a couple of boxes of each colour, mix the individual colours first and then mix all the colours. That'll help with any tolerance size-wise.

And make sure they're all the same size, or compensate for the size difference with a wider grout joint if you do find one colour is slightly larger / smaller.

Upload some pics when you're done, sounds like a good job that.

I've had this before, so I laid a load of tiles on the worktop that would join at either end, then got the customer to ok the design, then took a photo for reference. It takes a bit of time but worth it at the end!

That might be the way to go, it's not a huge area, most of is only 460 high, with the exception of the hob up to the extractor fan, so looking at full tile at the work top, I know, but it works with the layout, yep, thinking about it, that's what I'll do, I'll randomise the tiles as I said earlier, lay them out for the customer to see / swap / change and fix

Thanks for that, I like your thinking.

Also Alan....DON'T think about the pattern to much as you fix them....or you will start to follow a trend of colours,,,just fix and try not to clump the colours...

It's going to be hard not to clump with only 3 colours, worse still is I haven't a clue what colour they are until I get there tomorrow :yikes: I have been told that they're light fawn / beige but we will see, I'm not scared....................much :20:

Clumping in 2 and 3's is ok but watch for larger clumping if colours are similar...

It will be fine....

You had to go and say it, didn't ya, job went well after a late start and a few changes, stepped back tonight, as I have all day, a had a look, took a picture on the iphone ( forgot the camera :mad2: ) only when I looked at the picture did I see a pattern ish :incazzato: I'll post 'the picture' when I get it off the iphone.

As it happens, very nice tiles, and not bad colour differences.

Thanks again all

TUT..Alan wot did i say....you thought about it as you tiled didn't you....c,mon tell uncle Dave...

LOL, No, that's the thing, did the card shuffle with the stacks, fixed and be damned, and I'll be damned, there's a 'pattern' :mad2: And of all places, the centre piece, oh what to do

The customer is happy though, that's what counts, might replace one out of each 'row' of three tomorrow :mad2:
