builder has ruined travertine tiles installation & wants to tile over the ruined ones

Can anyone please help???
I have a builder who has installed travertine tiles over a plaster board partition. We found the tiles were not level. When he tried to remove them, they do not come out. He has said that the whole wall will end up being ripped out if he tries to remove them. He is now proposing to tile over the uneven ones.

Can the plaster board take such weight??? Can anyone please advise about the next steps and how hard it is to remove newly installed travertine tiles (1 week old). The gap between the tiles is 2mm.

Hello and welcome...

Sorry to hear of your troubles....but that wall need to be removed, you cannot add that much weight.....it will be easier and quicker just to rip out and put new on...close to the weight ratio as it is ...

The weight will be to heavy for the plasterboard, all depends what adhesive he used, was it tubbed or powdered

Thank you Dave. Is there any way such weight could be added to such a wall? I want to get all my info before I speak to this chap. Verynice builders, but reaching the end of a big job and I fear corners are being cut.

tell him to rip out the whole wall and redo it as dave says the weight will already be close to the maximum. dont let him tile over them be insistant.

NOPE!! not at all....some travertine is 10mm thick and is ok for plasterboard then it steps upto 12mm etc and then the weight can be to much...so to add another skin will be double what the plasterboard can hold....stand your ground and get it re-done please...

Not with a good powdered adhesive, you will break the travertine due to weaknesess in the tile

why let him re do it if he made such a mess the 1st time,,surely better to get someone else in?
