Just flicked thru jimbobs 'post history'. Started posting before he left his previous employment, has a couple of albums on his homepage, has done 90 mts of limestone and been recommended on this forum by a customer. a forum success story apart from he hasn't been seen since July

£1700 twenty years ago? that was tons of moola back then

:yikes:

you would be surprised at how much cheaper things have become in real terms

i cant discuss prices here but you are doing well if you can get twice now what we were paid then

we were heading into the mother of all recesions , mortgage rates were in double figures

mobiles were 70 a month before calls

and so on

1700 wasnt a lot then in terms of what it could buy

i never bought anything other than same nippers £6.00 that started me as a pool finisher + my plastering tools that i already had used my car for transport, then I've added stuff as I've gone along its all tax deductible for subbies ,so now i buy what ever i want

I think I started with about £1000........ 500 for a yellow pages ad and 500 for some tools to get me going, upgrade the tools as you go if you are not really flush to start with. Same goes for a van....I only had an estate car when I started.

Just come across this thread, some great advice in it so thanks to all that have contributed. I am hoping to start up in approx 18 months time when I leave the forces. Have completed a training course and already own an estate car but that will need replacing in the next 2 years due to the amount of travelling I'll be doing between now and then, I was thinking along the lines of a Ford Connect. I bought some tools from a guy on here that was quitting for a £100 and will be adding/replacing tools as required. Intention is to do work for friends/family etc to build speed and confidence and hopefully go for it in summer 2011. I'll keep posting my progress! Thanks again for all advice.

mitsubishi l200:yikes: maint & running costs of this are expensive ie tax servicing tyres insurince u will get a decent van for half the price & a lot less running costs
