My car failed it’s MOT yesterday because the back lens cover was cracked and a tiny bit of white light was showing through the red lens. The garage rang to tell me that it was going to cost £90 to fit a new lens cover. I had to think quick. So I said that I have a lens cover repair kit at home and I will bring it in. They said OK.
So off I popped down to the pound shop and found some red transparent sticky plastic. Brought it to the garage and stuck it on the lens cover. Instant pass !!! Saving £89

I had my car in for an MOT at Sratstones in Hanley last year, it needed an orange indicator bulb so they just put one in without asking me. £40.00 for the test and £14.50 to replace the bulb...........take it back out I said when I picked it up.
I got a spare out of my bulb kit and replaced it myself, 85pence.

Even Dick Turpin wore a mask.

Over in Northern Ireland we have governmant run MOT centres staffed by independant mechanics, only doing MOT's. They have all the vibration and other tests used nowadays and it only takes 20 minutes. It ensures every car on the road has done the same test for the same cost, 35 quid, 20 quid for a re-test if it fails.
Seems somewhat fairer, you have to get your car serviced first, or you can test it and see what it fails on, get those bits fixed and hey presto.

Over here they've limited MOT test centre's to 8 per day per MOT tester. So an hour per car. And it's about £25 with a free re-test.

I think it's like anything though, it's not what you know it's who you know. Got a few mates who work on cars. And my old man who I hadn't seen for 21 years but met again 8 months ago is a mechanic still and has been since a lad. I get most stuff done FOC now. :)
