Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Apart from the usual ailments, backs, knees etc. Do any of you folks out there suffer from Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. For those that are unaware of it, the symptons are all the digits with the exception of your pinkey tingle and go numb. Basically the nerves to your digits go through your wrist via the Carpal Tunnel, except the pinkey which sneakily goes another way. As a result of this the Carpal Tunnel gets inflamed and depresses the nerves...resulting in the tingling and numbness. It can also be known as Repetitive Strain. It can be quite painful and you become more aware of it after a hard days graft or during the early hours of the morning. I have it in both hands and at night wear a wrist splint and during the day a wrist brace. The next step will be an operation but that will put me out of work for a while.

Has anyone had the same or similar and what have you done to help relieve it. Anyone had the operation?

And before any of the more humerous ones of your mention, Its not bought on by when the wifes awat the hand will play if you get my drift.

:surprised:i slipped 2 discs & got 3 trapped nerves, back in 1993, in still gives me grief.
i managed to get on with it as i saw the injection needle they wanted to put in my spine:surrender:there was no way on this earth that was going to happenut: ,

Oh the nerve! Seems my right pinkey made a mistake by sneaking in another way than the rest though, as it's more busted than the other fingers. I don't have carpal tunnel syndrome as far as I can tell, but I do have some problems with imbalances in my lower arms. I compensate for that by using ergonomical tools and doing excersices, such as finger extension and tricep curls.

I got nothing to complain about considering the ailments you guys have got. Do know a guy who used big breakers on sites for years and has now had operation after operation on his hands, His tendons are curling his fingers into the palm of his hand and has strange lumps which need removing, And thats when we thought health and safety was a pain in the neck.

I do get this from time to time, but never knew why, and it has never got bad enough for me to go to the doctors over it, but at least I have an idea this might be the problem.

When I get it the most is in the mornings, I wake up with pins n needles in one had, left or right, and Im sure I never get it in my little finger, and then sometimes after a very hard days graft.

Fekin, perhaps you're sleeping with your hand/arm in a way which kind of "blocks" something. Happens to me every now and then.

Wow! I kinda get this. I quite often find that I get pins and needles in my fingers and my pinkie literally curls tight. With some effort and the power of thought I can get my pinkie to ping straight but it's really weird. I doesn't hurt so I've never bothered with the doc.

Is this not just a tilers inconvenience?

No, it's not, bcoz it's avoidable. I used to have the curling pinkey problem, but I've fixed it, by using tools with ergonomical grips, such as Hoffmann trowels, and by doing some grip extension with rubber bands. Avoid using manual hammers, and tools with old wooden type handles; thick rubber is the way to go.

The longer you go without doing anything about it, the longer it's going to take to fix. I had the curling pinkey problem for about 3 months, but it took me well over 8 months to fix.

One of my employees had had the carpal tunnel syndrome. For that he went to a special doctor who made some measurements with slight electro shocks to find out "how heavy" the syndrom is. Well, at the end my employee had had a small operation at his hand (better: inside his hand) where the carpal stream was cut. He is fine today but after the operation he couldn´t work for approx. 7 weeks.
