you need to state your payment terms if they are broken you can send a 7 day notice and take them to court this is what the construction act is for. you must now what the payment terms are before you start work!

That may sound all cut and dry, but the reality is far less smooth. Even when the courts rule in your favour, actually getting the money can take forever... Well, not literally forever, but an absloute age! Our legal system is a joke. :furious3:

City approved contracts.
Every job we do we don't proceed until we have our deposit and signed contract.
Standard deposit is 30% for labor up front, materials are 100% payable upon delivery. That way if they don't have the cash they don't get their materials in their house.
With people we know and have done business for we are not so strict and will often on smaller jobs leave the payment until the job is done. But this is only with trusted people.
Learn how to put a lien on a property.
I've never had to do it, but it is good to know so that if you need to use it as a threat then it is one with some teeth.
If you start out on the right foot and do a good job on time you should have less trouble with getting paid at the end.
