Ceramic Tiling Concrete Floor preparation Advice needed

Hi All,

I'm Looking to tile my first floor in the utility room And need some preparation advice for the concrete floor.

The Floor is partly painted rough concrete but seems level judging from my spirit level,

I'm unsure iF the surface is suitable for me to just go ahead and start laying my ceramic tiles or would I need to remove the paint(which would be hard work) and skim it before i begin laying the tiles?

Or would I be able to leave the floor as it is and Just apply some type of primer before laying the tiles?

I've included 2 pics to give you a idea of the conrete surface I'm working with

Any advice would be very helpful

Give Mapei technical support a ring. I would personally look at removing paint then self level, then tile

Thanx for the reply, I was hoping i wouldn't have to remove the paint but I want to do it right so can you advice on a cheap solution to removing it?

Also Can You recommend a decent self level compound?

I was hoping to pickup both items from my local DIY (B&Q or Homebase)

I certainly wouldnt be shopping there for self levelling compound, no point using inferior products. Mapei , Bal, Ultra , Weber all make good levellers. Dont forget this is what you will be wanting to adhere to the concrete and what you want the tile adhesive to stick to....dont cut corners here.

Would a normal belt sander be ok to remove the paint??

If its already flat and level, why self-level??
I'd be getting rid of the paint, prime and good to go surely

Im curious to your decision here Tony. Why would you use Ditra?

even if you don't get all of paint off, ditra matt glue will stick to that kind of surface like hell. Just my opinion

Hard work with a belt sander, I have tried most methods and teh grinder cup is the easiest but a sanding disc on a 180mm grinder is pretty good too . Dusty messy job though.

Cheers for the advised guys, Looks like I'll have to pickup a angle grinder with cup and work on it,

Bit confused on whether to use Normal adhesive or ditra matt glue without the self leveling compound now though:mad2:

use ditra glue for ditra, and tile adhesive for tiles . if you remove most of paint, and as you said floor is good, than maby you don't need self lev.

agree, ditra if not able to remove paint. I mean easier and dust free work, just to remove some loosed paint and to lay ditra.

depends on how much time will spend on removing paint etc. And i was just trying to help

Paul must deside what is quicker, remove all paint and make alot of dust or stick ditra (dust free)

The sub base should be clean dry sound and free from contaminants likely to affect adhesion of the floor covering....... It is ot easy to determine how well thepaint will be adheredto the concrete so best to remove it. Simple rotary floor sander with a copper disk would do the job. No need for ditra in my opinion as it looks like old concrete so will be reasonably stable. Up to you though...l.
