Just digested or at least partly digested that mammoth thread by Tile boy.

One thing that was mentioned was levels and their accuracy. Levels going out seem to be an occupational hazard. I'm a great believer in checking the level on a line by turning the level around and seeing if it gives the same reading in both directions. If it doesn't then the level will be out.

This way you know you've got a problem as soon as you start a job, and not when you're nearly finished.

I've always done this. It must be my time as an engineer that has made me think about this.

Related to your observation about frequently rechecking your levels....how many times have I been buying a new level, and immediately start checking it before getting the sale rung up and paying....only to have everyone involved look at me and say "what are you doing?"...and then they scoff at me when I explain that I am checking for accuracy.

No one does that! they tell me...

and how about checking a framing square for square!

:mad2:

The 1st way i was taught for testing levels was back in 1977.
Take 2 6 or 4 inch round head nails or screws and put one into a solid surface. Then take the 2nd nail/screw and place it just under the length of the level apart. Sit the level on top of the nails/screws and level the 2 nails/screws up , then turn the level around to test the level.
Its a more long winded way but you would usually find that this system was set up close by the site agents cabin on site, usually by the test brick walls. On some sites the Foreman (as he was called then) would actually check the level before you started work.

After reading the tileboy drama, I will be mainly testing my levels tonight before I watch the Newcastle/Boro relegation match on Sultana.

Good advice chaps - thanks

honestly how many tradies have used a water level and do they still teach it in the coarses:20::20::20:

I have used a water level many times but not recently as the contracts i get dont call for it.

same as Sir, have used them in the past, and still would, just don't seem to get the jobs that warrant one. I wouldn't even know if I still have one anywhere!
