Chipboard, 6mm Hardie & Bal single part fastflex

Evening,

I've got 30x30 ceramics to tile onto chipboard in bathroom roughly an area of 6'x4'

I know chipboard is not ideal in a bathroom however I'm happy that it's in good condition and solid on 8"x2" joists with little if any movement when i walk on it (I'm 16st btw!)

With this in mind I was going stick and screw 6mm Hardie board. Would Bal single part fastflex the right choice of product to stick board and tiles and Bal Supaflex to grout?

i know nothing about Bal but, over boarded with hardi, glued (with PU) and screwed @ 200 centres, i would use keraquick or equivelent S1 Adhesive, no problems

As long as minimal deflection is there then it can be used... but BAL won't recommend that adhesive to tile with..

I don't use BAL, so can't comment on it. However, I usually use Ardex 7001 to stick boards and tiles to wooden substrates. I would recommend screwing the boards at 150 to 200mm centres. Just make sure that there is no deflection before proceeding.

hi pro handy man that is the best adhesive for the job imo fastflex is an s2 adhesive. but u need to double check the deflection one way to do this is to fill a glass with water put it in the middle of the room. walk around the glass it if it spills theres more than likely to be to much movement. b4 u tile screw down the exhisting chipboard to the joists then overboard with hardi screw down at 200mm centres u can use any powdered adhesive under the board but on top fastflex

S2 would be overkill in my opnion, that is superflexi, as you said your a big lad and there is no deflection as is, so with the hardi glued with polyeurothane glue and screwed @200mm centres, you will be fine with an S1 IMO.

that said S2 is Bullet proof!

PU glue is ok on flat floors.. the idea behind using flexi bagged adhesive is that it takes up any undulations in the substrate prior to screwing down the hardi..this provides support to the board and prevents sagging in the hollows..

So it is wise to follow hardi's instructions..

I can't get NMP so have never used it but I do know that you should use normal tile adhesive for laying the hardie not Polyurathane glue like NMP stipulates.
