chipboard floor

[Fine Tiling]

Hi Guys,

I have a job where the existing floor is chipboard and explained to the customer that 15mm plyboard sheets has to be layed before i can tile the floor. They are reluctant to have ply layed, is there any other way of laying the tiles without ply. i know its a sillt question.

How big is the room. Whats the chip board like now. What tiles are they ??

The floor is 8m2 the tiles are basic 8mm 335x335 from wickes and the chipboard has been layed down for 9 years & looks ok

Sounds like a kitchen so it will attract traffic, 12mm ply is your answer screwed at 150 centres with Durabase CI mat to prevent the latteral cracking.. Must be your call but this is the best option

Have you considered Pecilastic?

now this answer is only if they insist n you laying the tiles on the chipboard, (no-ply as you stated)

if that is your only option, i would screw the extra screws at every 100mm, then tank the chip board to prevent any moisture. then use a coupling mat as wetdec says to prevent lateral cracking , then tile....its not perfect but its the best you can do woith the options you have. personally i would do as wetdec says. if the customer wont agree to ply then dont gtee the work but really you shouldnt be doing work you cant gtee if you know what i mean....

There is always the Fastflex or Ardex 7001 option at a push!

Have you considered Pecilastic?

Not for this job its a crack bridging membrane blown up to possibly function as an un-coupling membrane and should be used on "fully braced chipboard" which in its self is a get out of jail phrase put in by the manufacturer.

As long as the floor is stable and there is no deflection then you will not have any problems using Pecilastic put down with a 3mm V notched trowel. This will eliminate the 15mm that ply would cause.
