went to a council hose today to quote. When I got there there the house was, I must say, masked off beautifully, plastic sheet taped up to the skirting. Unfortunately I then went into the bathroom where this 'tiler', had done one 'bath end'' two massive lips, one tile slipped because of no spacer! he's back tomorrow to finish shower area, cos thats all council do, and customer wants it all tiled. She seemed a really nice girl and she had somebody who couldn't tile doing the tiling!

My mate moved into a council house a few months back, his kitchen is really big but the grout was really stained so he asked if they would do something about it... they turned up, gave him a grout rake and told him to scrape the stains off the grout :lol:

It took him ages but in all honesty it doesn't look to bad now

Not all councils are that bad. I have 2 tilers doing council work 24/7, and i can assure you, it's not cheep! though we don't do renovations, it's all full tanked and tiled wet-rooms for the disabled and special needs.

From my own experience with social housing tiling, they seem to get firms in that only pay their tilers peanuts around £10/m2, so they have to fix huge amounts of tiles so that they can earn some kind of living from it, therefore, they're generally slapped up without any care as to whether the joints are even and that the adhesive is trowelled on evenly.

They wouldn't get to if i had my way (stupid health and safety & working time directives) but they do deserve a medal.... i struggle to spend 2 minutes in some of the houses, just to sign off on the job. The whole house should be one big wet-room so you can hose it down!

Done it last year when i had sod all work coming in, getting big bathrooms that needed to be done within 1 day. Only way it could be done is if your work was crap, ie throwing them on the wall. I am not the fastest as it is so getting them in within one day was a nightmare and something i wouldn't do again. Wasnt a case of you putting the meters in and you have made enough cash for that day was a case of ALL of it had to be done as you were in a different address the next day.
After tiling the room it would be inspected a few days later, my first job got picked up for no grout around the bath and windows, said i presumed a mastic man would be in for that, no it gets GTOUTED.

parents had the same problem,i nipped in and they were standing in the kitchen waiting for my response!
well it involved a few swear words! i was there when they planned the new kitchen and asked if they would leave the tiles and i would do it,was told no due to health and safety yet the tiles were dropping off the walls when i touched them 4 hours after it had been done,10mm gaps between tiles and trim,tiles not flush,different grout sizes,tiled around 1 socket and behind the rest......................need i go on:mad2:

I live in a Housing association and they fitted a kitchen last year, the tiling was dot and dab.

Had to remove a few which were'nt sticking and found 10% of adhesive was holding them to the wall, tubbed of course.

they manage to find the only stuff thats worse than b&q value tubbed gear and cheaper
