As a NON tiler I post this message below without prejudice and without comment. I don't want to steer this topic away from your great news (maybe this message below should be started as another thread)

The words below are not mine - but those of a training centre owner.

This is news that will effect everybody in the tiling world, it will effect all tilers which in turn will have a knock on effect to sales and all associated....


New legislation
The time is coming that even tilers working in the domestic market will need an NVQ level 2 qualification, well its about to happen. We all know that to work in the domestic market you need not have a recognised qualification, well that loophole is about to be shut it will soon be law that you will not be able to get liability insurance without an NVQ level 2 or above. This will go for all trades not just tiling.

Costs to get qualified
If you have not registered with a training company to get your NVQ before the end of July you will have to pay,


If you choose not register right now then these are the later costs of a qualification

* Experienced workers (over 5 years) can do a two day assessment and achieve their qualification this will cost circa £550
* Under 5 years experience an NVQ will cost circa £1500 and take 3-9 months to achieve.

The message is to register NOW with someone that has funding you have four weeks and it will be free....


If you do not register NOW you WILL HAVE TO PAY...


The cost of Complacency
The trouble in the tile industry is that nobody thinks it will effect them "I only tile in the domestic market, so I don't need a qualification", well it will and if you do not act it could end your business.
* There are cases from experienced trades they are being refused entry to sites even with over 25 years of experience.
* Some tilers think once registered for an NVQ this is all they need to do because it allows them to apply for a CSCS card which allows them on site, this is true but that only lasts for one year !, if you do not achieve your NVQ within that year you will have to wait another 3-9 months for a qualification and to be allowed back on site.
* All of the above will be the same for the domestic market sooner or later or you will have to work without liability insurance

But this seems a critical message for tilers and I would rather post messages up and make you aware of some news than ignore it and let you find out some other way.

this is what we were told some twenty years ago, so we all made sure we were compliant and looked forward to a trade where only the properly trained were going to operate, since then we have had one crackpot scheme after another and the situation where any one can operate, all they have to do is nip down B&Q for a basic toolkit and they are in business, what did we all get qualified for!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!


if this is finally it and they are going to put their money where their mouth is then good, its long overdue

I shall look forward to working in a fully qualified and regulated trade where you get paid a fair days money for a fair days work, im just glad I lived long enough to see it

I've been hearing this is on the cards for some time, I blogged about it early 2009 and the date was meant to be for 2010 onwards.

In an article in the TSJ this month it reads that an NVQ level 1 is being discussed for labourers and those wishing to start out in tiling but haven't got the skills to complete a level 2 yet. No dates were given about this, or any actual confirmation of it going ahead, it was just suggesting there are talks about it.

Though I didn't see anything related to the NVQ requirements for domestic work and I would have thought there would have been a mention.

Perhaps just a bit of a circulation to encourage those to get assessed now?

I'm sure some of the training centre's will be along soon to comment.

Ive never heard anything of it, they have been talking about this for years as Dan said but thats it, nothing comes of it, i can see the health and safety side (cscs card) for sites but nothing on the domestic side, sounds like a ploy to get booked on an NVQ course quickly to me

If thats the case then there could be some merit in just getting your name on a list. I hope some of the tile training units on here can come and clarify.
Date of post is 5th July 2010 so there seems to be 20 working days left to sort out an application. Or just under a month.

I guess if its free and say for example your course is booked for October then you have plenty of time to pull out. But there is only a short time to apply.

Looking forward to seeing how this thread develops.

But training centres can get you funding anyway, Chase Tiling Academy did for me ....sounds like a scare tactic to me maybe cos they are short of students ? I still think people should do the NVQ2 though especially if you can get funding...its always there then.

I didn't think it'd be coming in domestic-wise as it's too hard to 'police'. Customers just don't understand the benefits right now of making sure your tiler is NVQ qualified. And all these 'bid for the cheapest tiler you can' type websites promote the exact opposite.

Scaremongering? Sounds like one company trying a different 'marketing angle' if you ask me.
I dont agree with that 'style' of marketing if thats what it is and id go out of my way to avoid that particular company if i was looking for the qualification.

If they cant stop people doing electrical work or window fitting without providing the required certificates it certainly isnt going to happen in tiling any time soon. The country is on its knees financially the lat thing the UK needs right now is to spend huge amount of money on stuff like this. Lets get out of the mess we are in before we start to regulate the industry

No one on domestic work has EVER asked me about my insurance. I volunteer the information instead.

I dont think refusing insurance is the way to go as it rules out a competent person who doesnt have the qualifications but has the experience required to do the job.
