I was speaking to a fellow tiler on a job today , that told me he uses his impact driver , to drill straight into mortar or blockwork walls when fixing his batons , no pilot holes, just straight in! Anyone else have any knowledge of this , as it would be very handy indeed ?

You would need the right screws that require no plugging.

I've done it with mine, doesn't always work mind. I'm too tight to buy special screws so i just give good old turbogold from screwfix the thrashing.

My makita impact drives normal wood screws straight into block 99 percent of the time

Doubt they'll go into brick without a pilot hole but lightweight blocks no problem except that lightweight bricks aren't really strong enough to provide a firm fixing with unplugged fixings. You don't want your Battens working loose.

You can / I have gone into some breeze / concrete blocks with dry wall screws, that was years ago and wasn't a permanent thing, I wouldn't like to think I was fixing batons to the wall this way.

yeah blocks no problem gives them a tight fix but brick you still have to plug

Yep, fire screws straight in to block now and again with mine. Ideal as a temporary thing but wouldn't just hang a basin without plugs.
