on floors i use a 12mm square notched trowel, its 450mm long and has never let me down, its the stainless steel type, bit more expensive but a quality made bit of kit,

The guy is a self confessed DIY'er and has come on here to seek advice for a job he wishes to carry out himself. This is not the first question he has asked and there is no need for the snide remarks. This forum is here to help not deride!
It was meant as a playful comment so climb off the high horse. Check my other posts, none have ever been snide in anyway.
Will edit my original post so not to offend the op though because it was definitely not intentional.

You said you have a solid ply subfloor.
It would be important to comment that you might have issues if you tile directly on plywood. Best is to use a membrane inbetween. Reason is that plywood will extend and contract with temperature and moisture changes, while tiles and glue are very more stable, and can cause the tiles to release.
I would recommend using a stable substrate between the ply and the tiles - check hardware store for recommendations, there are many different solutions.
