UK Do these 250mm tiles contain asbestos?

Tilers Forums Official Sponsors

Need some help please, starting removing the carpet grippers which were nailed into these tiles from a 1979 uk house and wondering if i have exposed myself to asbestos.

The tiles are 250mm x 250mm and are about 3mm thick.

The tiles were cracked from the nails but the pulling of the nails to remove the grippers further cracked some of the tiles.

Solution
I have ordered a testing kit to be sure of course, i just wondered if anyone had any experience with this or could give me some insight before i send off/get results which could take a few days/week.

They do contain asbestos but it's very low like old marley tiles. Take them carefully try not to brake them and wear a good mask and you should be fine.

What you have, I believe, are thermoplastic tiles. I used a lot of them in the nineteen sixties. To my knowledge there was not any asbestos in them.

Dispose of them in plastic bags tied and knotted twice during transport. Take them the tip maybe.

Hi lous88

You need to be careful when dealing with asbestos, both from a safety and a regulatory point of view.
Establishing if the tiles do contain asbestos is the correct first step. Once you have this information I suggest you take advice from the HSE, as they have no financial incentive and will be unbiased, this link will give you information on what is classified as licensed and unlicensed activities.
Professional asbestos removal tends to be expensive but may be unavoidable.
Transport and disposal of asbestos can be difficult as it is classified as a hazardous waste.
It's important that you follow the correct procedures.

Good luck
