I find that with experience you will be able to feel as you lay tiles if they are embedded solid....it's hard to describe but you can tell as you are fixing whether the tile is well bedded......the pros will know what i mean though.....
And while you are spreading your adhesive bed, you can feel slight dips etc in the feel of the trowel so adjust the bed to suit....this feel as i call it will come with experience.....trust me....

Does this apply to me,i had the supplier come out and look at the stuff and they gave me the powdered stuff as a replacement within a short time of laying the tiles they were solid
the tub stuff an impression of the back of the tile was clearly seen on the adhesive with no slack areas

Signed.

I check tiles here and there, and I check floors with a small tapping tool, can't remember what it's called...

Oh, btw, ding, 1000 posts

You can generally tell when your tapping them down with your rubber hammer.

I take we all do that?

there is no need to remove a tile that is hollow on one corner there is a method you can use that will draw grout under the tile to solid up the corner
pour some water down the joint of the tile and mix up some neat cement slurry or grout slurry run this over the affeceted area you will see the grout dissapear down the joint and start displacing the water, the specific gravity of the slurry is heavier than water and the slurry draws under the tile . leave it till the next morning the tile will be rock solid no hollow sound this is a very old tip often used by marble fixers and stone layers give it a try it will a lot easier than choppin the tile out

Bear in mind that mixing in more water than the product is designed for, might cause color differances, effloresence, and cracking, later on with some grouts. If you want to flood grout, it's usually best to do it with a product meant for it.

you should add a pair of tap shoes to your tool kit
and always do a lord of the dance routine on every floor you lay

can just picture pjtiler tap dancing over his newly laid floor to the tune of keep 'young and beautiful'.....and then winking to the customer and saying, 'you'll hav no problems with then darlin, ther're down for life.......wink wink
