Discuss do you think that some training centres should be more honest in the UK Tiling Forum area at TilersForums.com.

The Legend; Phil Hobson RIP

After reading a few posts that some have put up regarding their expectations and what they were told they could earn I think some of them should be ashamed of themselves. Its all well and good showing the basics but be realistic about what the future might bring.

:dizzy2:

I would like to see the government put more funding into colleges, and legit training centres. Also police the unscrupulous ones. The newly trained tilers are the future of our industry. Lets have well trained ones.

typical sales talk though, anything goes to get you in the door and signed up! what happens later is entirely up to you!
There comeback is that it is possible, what they don't mention is that it takes years to build up a customer base and you won't walk in right away and take work from established tilers who have been working for the same community of family and friends for years

What evidence do you have that they are mis-representing the potential earnings of a tiler!
Surely they can only teach the basics and its up to the individual to take that information and apply it to a career.
Anyone who thinks that a 4day/2week/4week course is the answer to a new business set up shouldn't be self employed.

Agreed but I'm not sure it's the average wage, some tilers will earn a lot more but most will earn a lot less

Then you can use that argument to every training course! Not long ago they were advertising big money to train in IT and now those people are going into tiling.
My point in question is the title - how do you know that the training centres are not being honest!
The only views I have read on the forum in the last 11 months have been positive towards the Training centres - unless I have missed something?
As for the 'fighting over scraps' its called competition - and for an established tiling contractor this should not be an issue.

Maybe it should have be titled some training centres..

The ones that sponsor tilers forums are far from bad ones and have a very good reputation..

So gooner you cannot tar all training centres as not being honest....that is quite a bold statement to make with no proof of what training centres tell thier students..

Wow, brave words there, John.
I think there is such a thing as hard sell though, and you can do anything with numbers, the oldest trick in the book. Darren from NETT didn't dazzle us with promises, he basically said like with every other business you've got to get off your a** and get out there to get the work, it won't come to you. And gave us lots of marketing tips, I still haven't followed all the advise he gave me personally, but he did give it. I've been had with hard sell myself in other areas, felt like an idiot afterwards but at the time got caught up in the Hurrayh Henry approach. I suppose tiling schools are no different. Sad fact of life.

i dont think they are being honest with there trainees by reading some of the posts on here for a start!!the training centers see them as cash cows ,and misleading them in to thinking they are going to get thousands, when you and i know that is a long way short of the truth, for a considerable time, as for fighting over the scrapps, who wants to do that in there right mind, my idea of fair competition is not a market of ten minute wonders all undercutting each other and ME but a fair playing field of tradesmen that know there trade inside out and not to many as to ruin any status that we have got
