Domestic tiling job in Wokingham

I have a new extention that wants tiling. 60m2 of porcelain tiles for the floors, and 20m2 of tiles for the walls. 6.5m2 of the floor tiles will be upstairs on a new green chipboard floor - assume that I will need 6mm ply/hardiboard or similar between tiles and floor. The remaining fllor tiles are going on concrete, and the wall tiles all on to clean plaster walls. Nothing fancy like wet rooms that need tanking. I quite fancy doing the work myself - what should I look out for?
If I was to get the work done for me, what could I expect to have to pay?

we don't discuss pricing in open forums so I'm afraid nobody will be able to tell you how much you could expect to pay for the job you describe. If you do wish to receive some quotes for the work from tilers in your area, you are welcome to post in our I'm Looking For a Floor and Wall Tiler section, where tilers local to you will contact you to discuss your requirements directly.

I'm sure however that our members will be able to guide you through the job from a DIY point of view and no doubt will comment here once they have read your post.

If you are doing it yourself dont forget your diamond holesaws for drilling the holes in the tiles.

Porcelain is very difficult to drill without the right gear!

OK Have posted question about pricing on seperate area, and thanks for the tip about the diamond drills. About the grren chipboard flooring, is marine ply, aquapanel or hardiboard better? If ply, is 6mm sufficient? I assume that ply/hardiboard/aquapanel is fixed at 150 centres, not glued.

if you use ply it has to be a minimum of 15mm but ply is not the best surface to tile IMO 6mm hadi is the way to go glued and screwed

OK, more stupid questions.
Hardieboard 250 it is. I have been advised to use PVA (diluted 1:4 mix) on the walls. Should I PVA the hardieboard? Is the hardieboard better nailed or screwed?
Adhesives. I understand I need to use a flexible adhesive for wooden floors. Bostik, Unibond, Mapei or Bal? and then which of the many types that appear to be there - would prefer white as the grout will be white. Slow set/Fast set/powder/premixed?

PVA is a no no, SBR primer is the way to go

no need to prime the hardi just wipe the surface with a damp cloth.

Builder advised PVA for the walls - new plaster. Tiles are Spanish (Metropol Cirrus Blanco) Porcelain for the floor and ceramic for the walls.

your builder is wrong with his advise. PVA has no place in tiling.

what size tiles are you putting on to the new plaster?

Wall tiles are 233 x 330, with mosaic feature strip (mixed stone/glass) 65 x 330

Id also use slowset addy if your not experienced.
