Doing a full refurb just now with a different squad of fitters as a favour(their tilers on holiday). Everything was going fine till this morning. Giving the bath a quick wipe and low and behold a big dink in it. Looks like damage from the edge of a tile. Well i know it wasn't me but do u think the culprit would own up, no chance. Finger squarely getting pointed at me. Told the boss of the job if it had been me i would've owned up to and tiled the bathroom for free as compo for him. I know he doesn't believe me and thats the bit that ticks me off, plus the fact that the culprit is letting him blame me. Last job for him me thinks, can't work with guys like that and if he can't take my word for it not being me. And i know always check before u start. Was just one off those days though.

were existing tiles taken off?, that's usually when bathers get dinged (assuming original bath was stopping in)

We've had that once before a few years ago, no mark on the plastic wrap when checked, bath was fitted, tiles were then fixed, wrap removed and there it was, marked on side of bath about 1 cm round. There was no way that mark could have got there without breaking the wrap because of the depth.

Plumber got in touch with a company he knows and it was repaired for about £90. I didn't see him do it but it was same process as a car dint, filler, sand, spray, sand, polish.

Couldn't tell where it had been done, certainly cheaper than giving your wages up.

If he is happy with your work , then he has to pay you , the issue with the bath is separate to the work.

Just to add - Once the bath has been fitted there was no comeback with supplier, but who takes the wrap off before tiling?

Ive known chips to happen on the top of the bath from where the chippy has built his frame amd the screws have gone through and once pressure is put on the area the bath chips. Anyone else come across this before?

Happened to me once. After that I usually gaffer taped a dust sheet tight across the top of baths and used a board on the middle to demonstrate to the customer I had never been near the inside of the bath.

First bathroom I did this year ended up with a chipped bath. Wasn't sure who done it as the wrap was still on, so the plumber, joiner and me all just paid 30 quid each to get the bath doctor in. Splitting it is the fairest way I think, as we all make mistakes and not a problem as long as its not the same person making the mistakes.

That whats gets me Peter, if the person that did it owned up i wouldn't have a problem sharing cost as like you say we all have our own mishaps. It's the fact that he's letting me get the blame thats annoying me. It's been sorted now,they just changed the bath. I do that with my own squad as well Peter,we just split the cost.

agree with you saltire dont like the sound of him tbh....however you need paid seperately and wouldnt a repair be okay? 70 quid max normally looks brand new

I done it years ago,
full bathroom refurb, me & my mate who's a plumber.
I was replacing the facings round the door as it was the only thing she didn't want touched but they looked old & worn so I replaced them,
Swung the estwing back & took a chunk out of the lip of the bath.
Quick Phone call to the plastic surgeon (£80) & you couldn't see the repair..

I always tile before fitting the bath..leaving the first row out..its easier and less chance of damage..plus standing in the bath is a pain..always worried about dropping one from a height..

Can never understand why tilers don't use half inch plywood over a protective sheet (bath board) as standard when working in a bathroom! It gives you an extra work surface and shows the client you are taking care. Accidents do happen but no need to invite blame.

yea i got it after typing...you tilers are fortunate..us multi-trades have to take toilets out and what we find in the pipe aint pleasant !

I know what you mean Ian, years ago before site portaloos we had to work over toilets that had been used by every trade on the site, before they were plumbed in, not nice. Back to the thread, I have been lucky over the years and not had many damaged baths/basins etc.

That could be the kiss of death, I will probably drop my lump hammer through the fancy whirlpool bath tomorrow.:yikes:

Me. Every time, without fail... The amount of times i've taken the wrap off to find a scratch underneath. Once you've fitted the legs, it's down to you. I for one, don't want to pay for a replacement bath! And lets be honest, that film offers zero protection.

I always check baths before starting the job,if there is something there always point it out

I always unwrap them and give them a once over before I put the waste and taps on then bath fitted, dpm laid over the edges right to the wall and over the overhang outside the bath, bathboard on top then pull the bathboard away enough to get the cuts to the bath in and wedged up 3mm from the bath, after all laid and grouted bath board off, pull the dpm out and silicone

That's how I do it now..................after dropping a tile in a bath

You should always check baths shower trays before you start but if it's a acrylic bath and it's not to deep you can file and sand then t cut and polish chips out
