emulsion walls

Hi - just starting out and I've a thick emulsion painted wall to tile over with
300 x 400 ceramic's - should I just rough t up ( any tools recommended) or strip it completely

I always used to score it well using something like an old screwdriver or similar then give it a good wash with sugarsoap. The best thing to do it with is a Fein Machine but not many people have them. A good test is to stick some duct tape on it and if it pulls off the emulsion it needs sorting prior to tiling otherwise the tiles are only stuck to the emulsion

Thanks for that - I was thinking of getting my electric sander over the walls withsome coarse paper. I guess that will do just as well ?

For a 300 x 400 tile I would be thinking about sanding down with a corse paper, washing down with sugar soap then priming before fitting tile.
