I've been asked to tile a fireplace and re grout a tatty looking bathroom..... tiles have been there 30 odd years and there is a tiled vanity unit and bath panel. The wall opposite has got embossed wallpaper newly put up so am figuring I will cover this up before I get the fein out!

The fireplace hearth/plinth is made of chip board so was thinking acryllic primer before tiling onto it. Is this ok to do as its only a small area? Can't see any other way of doing it.
Was thinking £150 inc mats for the whole job. I think thats reasonable but what do you all think?

depends how long you rekon its gonna take. if its gonna take you about 5 hours in total yeah but any longer i would definetly charge more

Thanks tysfoot... was thinking a day and a half - tiles are 150's but not sure if I will be able to get any more for it. The guy wants to give me a hand in the bathroom with his vaporess steamer (softens the grout) but I'm gonna get straight onto it with my fein lol.... got to take old Silicon off and re seal bath too!

That would depend on the size of the bathroom to be regrouted. I find regrouting very time consuming and messy. Dont forget time will be needed to clean up....it all adds to the cost.
As for the fireplace, i think i would be charging around £70 plus materials.

Ok Quoted him £180 inc.

Told him that re grouts were quite time consuming and that it would probably take me all day to do just that. And then there was the fireplace to do so it would be 2 days work. He didn't sound impressed and said he would think about it. So think I lost that one. This is doing my nut in. If anyone would like to tell me where I am going wrong I am all ears!

Regrout jobs can go a number of ways , it depends how it was tiled before and what they have used.
If they have butted the tiles up then you will damage the tile trying to get grout out. If you slip when removing grout and scratch a tile then thats another issue with the client.
I had someone ask me to do a smal regrout over the bath area once, i said ok over the phone without seeing it. When i arrived the grout had been painted with grout paint (Green) No matter what i tried i couldnt get the edges clean.
Another time ( well quite a few times) i have regrouted a well known bookmakers shop and the grout was so bad i would have been quicker tiling the whole lot again.
Not a job i would want to advertise. As you have found out, they just dont want to pay.

I couldn't agree with you more SirRamic on everything you've just said and its comforting to know that I'm not living in cloud cookoo land with unreasonable quotes. I wonder if he'll find someone cheaper or weather he'll do the job himself. He gave me all this spiel about wanting a top notch job done too and that if I did a good job it would be cash in hand...... oh well!

Make sure you give him a receipt and make sure you put the money in the bank!

Tax man loves that sort of thing.

I would have been £180 just for the regrout! My first ever job as a pro was regrouting a shower cubicle - didn't have a fein though - and I charged £220 for that. Messy, tiring and lots of potential to damage tiles.

Grumps I wrote you a reply to this post earlier basically thanking you and slagging off his bathroom  well it is hideous lol. Anyway I thought I'd posted it but maybe I pressed the wrong button or something but basically thanks for making me feel better and yes agree with messy tiring and potential to damage tiles.... so add long winded to that....

I would have put it through my books grumps.... I need money going through my business account its just thats what he said.... just trying to emphasise the point that he stressed he wanted a good job done..... funny how he don't wanna pay for it!
